So you have your heavy equipment operator training under your belt, your certification diploma now hangs on your wall, and the phone calls are coming in requesting an interview. You are ready to work on site and take on some of the monster toys you have been working so hard to play with. Next comes the moment of truth – the heavy equipment operator job interview. A job interview can be intimidating and can determine the difference between a great job and mundane one. However it does not have to be that bad.
Many companies will hire on the spot since the demand is so great for heavy equipment operators. None the less, this is a chance for you to meet the team/company and a chance for the prospective employer to meet you. Being well-prepared for the interview and its questions can arm you with getting the best offer you are worth. Below are some tips and sample questions that have accumulated specifically to heavy equipment operators. The day of the interview, wear nice dress slacks with a nice shirt, tie optional.
5 General Tips to Always Remember During the Interview:
1. Never Lie. Always tell the truth. Make sure your resume does not include lies either. They want to know why they should hire you and how you can benefit their operations.
2. Be Confident and Positive. The interviewer will not be confident in you unless you exhibit confidence in yourself. They want to see positive can-do attitudes.
3. Sit up and Stand Straight. Don’t slouch or seem unnaturally stiff. Just sit straight up with good posture.
4. Smile. Smiling will relieve some of the stress and allow you to be more personable with the interviewer.
5. Be Respectful and Courteous. The interviewer may be viewing your every move as generally they are signs of your behavior and attitude. Since you have already gained an interview opportunity, they have already expressed interest in your capabilities and experiences/education.
They are not allowed to ask personal privacy rights questions. Most interviewers are aware of this. They can not discriminate or ask about age, gender, or race. Do not get too personal, and remember to be positive.
Questions that Seem to Come Up during a Heavy Equipment Operator Interview
Common in the construction industry, interviewers will ask behavioral type questions such as the following:
What is your greatest personal achievement?
Where do you see yourself in five/ten years?
What is your favorite color?
What is your worst quality?
What are your strengths/weaknesses?
Do you have any questions for us? Always answer this. Do not say you don’t have any questions. Ask about the company history, the size of the company, who you are replacing, anything about the position. Basically you want to show them that you are equally interested.
Remember you want to show that you are positive and will be a great asset to their operations. Always lead back to this and you should do fine. Be confident and well-prepared and you will soon be part of a team. Have fun with the monster toys!
Making sure your resume is a powerful marketing document is a wise investment in your career. It can set you apart from your competition, maximize the amount of interviews you land and ultimately play into how much a company offers you.
After all, you are negotiating with potential employers from the moment you connect with them to the time the offer is made. So everything that happens in that window of time plays into your offer…including how well targeted, well designed and compelling your resume is.
Here are five elements you will want to make sure your resume has:
Number one: Targeted Format
Your resume must be compelling for the type of position you are focusing on. If you are a sales executive of course you are going to want to quantify your sales skills in terms of territory development, revenue generation, and types of skills associated with sales and secondary support skills such as client management customer service, public relations and marketing.
Number two: Value Proposition Statement
Under the heading of your resume you should have a value proposition statement. An example of a value proposition statement is a 3 to 4 sentence overview of your focus and your strengths. Here’s an example of a VP Statement for a technology executive:
Innovative & highly competent business and technology leader with 15+ years experience developing creative technology solutions that enhance performance, effect change, drive profits and growth. Proven reputation to:
Note: A value proposition statement is different from a personal objective statement. A personal objective statement is not the best to start out with on a resume simply because it’s a statement about what YOU want. Rather, share with your potential employer what skills and strengths you have to offer THEM.
Number three: Quantifiable Achievements
This is one of the most important components to your resume. You need to communicate in your resume not just what you do, but what HAPPENDS when you do what you do! This technique also helps employers envision you working with them, helping them with similar challenges and issues.
Number four: Key-Word Rich Content
Key words organized in a group called something like “core competencies” for instance, will do two things for you. It serves to potentially qualify you for more interviews, assuming those companies you are submitting your resume to use key word scanners. Second, key words. i.e., your strengths that stand alone allow the reader to view your competencies independent of any past company associated with it. This has a positive psychological affect as again, it enhances the reader’s ability to picture YOU in the position they are working to fill.
Number five: Two Resume Versions
You are going to want two versions of your resume. One in ASCII text format and one clean word version. Your ASCII text version is one you will use for all your electronic submissions. This plain text format will hold it formatting and thus look much cleaner on the receiving end. Once you save a copy of your resume in this format, you will want to go in and clean up all the symbols and spacing so it’s readable. Your word version is your clean word copy you can both print out as a hard copy or attach as a word document in an e mail.
Isn’t it strange that some of us find ourselves struggling with a very strange monster, one that we live with on a daily basis? It seems at times that no matter what we do, things just don’t seem to go our way. What works one day may not work the next. It might be a week, or more, before what worked on day one works again. I’m talking, of course, about internet marketing. It’s a monster for most of us, but not for some. How did those guys tame this monster?
Ask one, and they’ll tell you perseverence. Another might say, repetition. And yet another may even say luck.
There are many reasons for why and how one could have found a way to ‘tame the monster’, but we’ll cover just a few for now.
Discover your strengths and weaknesses.
I’m sorry to tell you this, but contrary to what most marketers will tell you, not just anyone can do this kind of work. It takes tenacity, a strong-willed person, a goal-oriented person. Frankly, there are far to many who just don’t fit that billing, yet! Be willing to do whatever it takes.
Being determined is one thing, being flatulent about what you want is something else altogether. You must never waiver in your efforts to attain your goals. Know what your resources are.
There are as many resources on the internet as there are web pages (ga-zillions). Once you’ve found what you want to do, seek out the resources that are available. Use them . . . abuse them! Literally. You’ll only get as far as your willing to push. If your resource happens to be a person, or group of people you’ve found, the only way they are going to know you are serious is to use them extensively. Once they know you’re sincerity is real, that your desire is strong and your determination bold, they will go out of they’re way to help you along.
That brings us to a resource that almost everybody can use. In fact, if you can’t use it then you’re already successful and have millions in the bank. If not, then you need this.
A good friend, Joel Broughton, has produced a totally free system that provides not only the training in every aspect of online marketing available but by bringing together a group of people that are highly successful to help you become successful. People like Janet Legere, Mike Filsaime, Mark Call, and Ewen Chia, just to name a few. This is, by far, the most extensive and eclectic group of people out there. All willing to help you reach your goals.
The point here is that in one place, for the first time ever, you’ll have every resource that is of any value ready, willing and able to provide you the information and training you need to be successful. In fact, many of you are already involved in one of the hundreds of MLM programs available. That’s great, because now you can take your program, incorporate it into Joel’s system and watch your numbers rise to the top!
Hey! I’m not talking about a few people joining downline. I’m talking about a lot of people. Hundreds. Thousands, even. What’s more, you’ll have available to you a totally passive source of income. Let’s face it, not everyone wants to be in your program. But, they will be a part of your growing mailing list once they look in for the first time. Once there, they are yours and only yours. Did I mention that your list is moneytized?
Remember I said you’ll have a source of passive income?
